A university in Nanjing has recently started recording classroom activity using facial recognition. Not only does this infringe privacy, but it also runs counter to other ethical concerns. With a focus on education, combined with the pressures imposed on the educated and educators alike by pushy parents, this jail style school control is increasingly the trend in Chinese education but it is likely to have a devastating impact. The unscientific adoption of this trendy technology should be subjected to far more systematic analysis.
